The Board of Trustees was established at the founding of Boston College in 1863 and for many years was the sole governing agency of the university. With the creation of a Board of Directors in 1968 the Board of Trustees retained certain responsibilities. In 1863, a charter from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts authorized five Jesuits of Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus to incorporate as β€œthe Trustees of the Boston College.” Their South End school became the first chartered college to operate in Boston in September 1864, when twenty-two boys – with an average age of fourteen – enrolled and classes began.
